Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Douglas on July 30, 2008

Photo I.D.

"So, you got your new driver's license?"

"Yep."

"Let me see it."

"Why?"

"I want to see the picture."

I can't imagine why anyone would want to see the picture on my driver's license, but he insisted, so I took it out of my wallet and handed it over.

He immediately started laughing.

"What's so funny?" I demanded.

"This picture! This is a horrible picture! What did you do, eat a hundred dill pickles before getting this picture taken?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"You look so sour. Why couldn't you at least smile for the picture?"

"Tell me," I said, "what is the purpose of the photo I.D.?"

"For identification."

"And when am I going to need it?"

"Well, uh, I guess...when you get pulled over for speeding."

"And you think I'll be smiling then?"
