Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by overmortal on November 6, 2008
"I currently work at a large feed mill, and I sometimes go to the roof, which is very high up, and look out at the world around me. To the south, I can see, on the distant horizon, the towering buildings of Charlotte, NC, which is some 30 miles away. To the west and northwest I can see the Blue Ridge Mountains, which call to me in a very profound way. I could write for days about looking out from the top of that feed mill."

I Long for the Mountains Beyond the Mist

I long for the mountains beyond the mist
Like arms that held me only once
I'd risk the roads, the sea, the fist
And welcome them with jaw afront
For lips that I have never kissed

I long for the mountains to the West
To conquer them and then go North
To see if I may pass the test
Victorious, to venture forth
And hope that I may prove the best

I long for the mountains clothed in green
Upon my tower, I stand and look
Atop the world, so much I've seen
Though all the pictures that I took
Do not show where my heart has been

I long for the mountains, calm and still
For pine and rock and water cold
The cleanest air, my lungs to fill
Where fainting hearts, refreshed, are bold
To strengthen, once again, the will

I long for the mountains, far away
Yet still within two hours' reach
Though, all alone, they cannot sway
The friendship that I do beseech
Beyond the mountains, where you stay
