Happy Birthday
One year ago todayI think
One year ago today.
I carried you still within me, our hearts beating together,
my blood coursing through your veins.
You were mine and mine alone.
God and I alone had touched you, had held you safe and warm.
You could read my mind without words being spoken.
I knew when you woke, and when you slept, and when you hiccuped.
One year ago today
I remember
One year ago today.
You entered our world, screaming and cold, and confused.
I welcomed you, trembling, into my arms, my blood warm on you still.
I kissed your head for the first time, I breathed the smell of you.
God and I alone know what you mean to me, and what I will do for you.
You are my baby, my love, my son.
Today, it is for you and your smile and your laughter and your life
for which I give thanks.
