Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by Danny O'Bigbelly on April 7, 2010

A Bad Start to the Day

Joey knew that it was going to be a bad day when he woke up on the wrong side of the bed--the side on which Luisa usually slept.

Luisa liked to sleep on her right side, and liked it when Joey snuggled up to her from behind, so her preference defined where Joey could sleep.

But Luisa knew that there are other women--women Joey knows--who prefer to sleep facing in the opposite direction. When Luisa wakes up and Joey is on the wrong side of the bed, draping the wrong arm around her, she suspects that he is dreaming about someone else.

Joey was aware of the situation before he opened his eyes. He could hear Luisa lightly snoring on the other side of the bed. Since she was still asleep, perhaps there was a chance that he could maneuver to the other side of the bed without waking her, but it would be difficult. Luisa was a light sleeper and tended to wake up whenever Joey got out of bed.

All hope vanished when Joey opened his eyes and saw that Goldenrod, Luisa's enormous golden retriever, had laid claim to Joey's usual spot. Joey could imagine no way to dislodge the ill-tempered beast that would not wake Luisa, let alone the entire household.

Joey saw that the alarm clock was going to go off in two minutes. There wasn't enough time to do anything except imagine what might happen. He held Luisa close and stroked her beautiful hair.
