my Dad

memories of my Dad involve the land
a dairy farmer all his working life
up at the crack of dawn to milk the cows
a life filled with hard work and full of strife


worries over finance, unexpected bills
eggs and bacon breakfast every morning
the only cooking my Dad ever did
out in all weathers with each day dawning


making hay, ploughing and tilling the soil
a family man who trusted few
respect from him had to be well earned
but he was very loyal to those he knew


Laughter also filled his times of leisure
badminton and tennis with us two girls
days out to visit gardens, country shows
or walking in the fields or local hills


later his garden giving him such joy
with plants and trees and birds and fish to tend
A carer for my Mum for many years
A loyal hard working husband and friend


He learned to cook and bake in later years
and managed hoist and moving Mum around
He only ever had one holiday
but loved his farm with nature all around.
