Writing Resources from Fifteen Minutes of Fiction

The following is a piece of writing submitted by R. Wesley Lovil on May 23, 2010
"Such a silly question yet the only one I remember her asking"

What Kind of Tree are you?

A deciduous tree is such a tease she has no pride at all
She sheds her leaves and then she stands so naked every fall
Now an evergreen could not do that for her mother told her no
Oh she drops leaves as all must do but her branches never show
When Barbara Walters asked us once 'What kind of tree are you?"
I thought about it at the time then but all I said was, "Really?"
Then my answer came from some dark place and boy it was a dilly
A person who's been raised properly and been told their blood is blue
Could only be the kind of tree whose branches stay all dressed
Yes I want to be that type of tree as if you could not guessed
So with pride I pick an Evergreen that's the tree I want to be
But deep down I really longed to be as free as the maple tree
