Astronomer for the people

Carl Sagan was an Astronomer, astrophysicist, and cosmologist among other things but of course, he was most famous for his expiring television show, 'Cosmos, a personal Voyage.' Mr. Sagan took our vast universe of incomprehensible distances and unknown worlds and made them interesting. His wry speaking skills plus his obvious passion turned boring into exciting. How many of us who couldn't care less about public TV and science shows, eagerly awaited Cosmos to come on.

There aren't too many men of science who are beloved by the public as well as respected by his peers but Carl Sagan was just such a man. He even has a unit of measurement humorously named after him. The 'Sagan' is equal to four billion miles because of the way he often spoke of billions and billions of miles when describing far-flung distances.

His television show, filmed in the eighties, with the unusual hair and clothes of the time is still shown in reruns today and is as fresh and interesting as it was back then. Mr. Sagan's scientific achievements alone make him a good candidate for a commemorative stamp. However, I feel it was his skill at tweaking the common man's interest in things unknown that make him deserving of a stamp in his honor.
