Get a Writing Prompt
For a decade, Fifteen Minutes of Fiction had a weekly writing prompt. Some of these are specific to certain times of year, or specific holidays. They are presented here in no particular order; click the "Get Another" link to see another randomly selected prompt.Technical Writing
My eleventh grade English teacher required each of his students to write "how to" essays - essays that explained in very clear terms how to perform everyday tasks like tying shoes, organizing books on a book shelf, changing batteries in a flashlight, or baking a loaf of bread.Surprisingly, some of these were harder to write than we thought they would be. Pick a task, and write a detailed essay explaining how to perform that task. Imagine that your reader has no prior knowledge of the task (thus, for example, if you were writing about baking bread, you couldn't just say "knead the dough" - you would have to explain how to do that).
